St. Joseph Port Authority sending first grain ever down the Missouri River

The first grain ever moved from the St. Joseph Port Authority is on its way down the Missouri River.

Transport 360, which operates the St. Joseph port, said two barges filled Monday with grain will go to New Orleans before likely being shipped internationally.

A third barge loaded Monday is carrying sandbags downriver for a project.

Transport 360 general manager Jason Laipple says port officials have been told the Missouri River should stay at or below flood stage for the next couple of months.

Chief Executive Officer Bill Becker says the port expects to send about 20 barges into the winter.
The Port Authority has expanded this year to double the facility's size and can now hold up to 10,000 tons of dry storage.
